Dr Knox Peden (Postdoctoral Research Fellow)

Knox Peden earned his PhD in European intellectual history from UC Berkeley in 2009, and also holds an MA in the History of International Relations from the London School of Economics and a BA in History from the University of Pennsylvania. Between 2008-2010 he worked as a research associate on an AHRC-funded project devoted to the Cahiers pour l'Analyse (1966-69), a journal published in France at the height of the structuralist era. His writings have been published in Modern Intellectual History, History and Theory, Continental Philosophy Review, and Radical Philosophy.

Knox is a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the Centre, where he specializes in late modern intellectual history with a focus on philosophy. His first book is an account of the resurgence of enthusiasm for Spinoza’s ideas in twentieth-century France. At present, he is writing a survey titled French Philosophy Today: A Historical Introduction, which Bloomsbury will publish in 2014. Structured thematically, this volume will engage with the ideas of many French thinkers currently gaining an audience worldwide, e.g. Henry, Marion, Badiou, Rancière, Gauchet, Laruelle, Malabou, Meillassoux, and Stiegler. Finally, he is in the earliest stages of a broad research project on the historical relationship between secularism and philosophy, using a series of “Spinoza Controversies” from the late eighteenth century to the present to structure the inquiry.
