The degree of Doctor of Letters (DLitt) is higher doctorate, awarded on the basis of outstanding scholarship and academic distinction, or as an honorary degree to in recognition of exemplary service in a particular sphere.   Peter Harrison specializes in the history of science and the history of religion, and has written a number of influential books on the origins of modern science.  Before coming to the University of Queensland in 2012, he was the Idreos Professor of Science and Religion at Oxford.
