 4.00 – 5.30pm
CCCS Seminar Room
Level 4, Forgan Smith Building

This seminar examines a range of different understandings of secularization, and considers some common narratives that describe the putative demise of religion. A particular focus will be the common idea that science has been a significant factor in the decline of religious belief and practice in the modern West.

A podcast for the seminar can be accessed here: Part 1 Part 2 Part 3

Peter Harrison is Director of the Centre of the History of European Discourses at UQ, and a Senior Research Fellow at Oxford’s Ian Ramsey Centre. An authority on the rise of modern science, his five books include, most recently, Wrestling with Nature: From Omens to Science (Chicago, 2011) and The Cambridge Companion to Science and Religion (Cambridge, 2010). His 2011 Gifford Lectures will appear later this year with University of Chicago Press under the title ‘Science, Religion and Modernity’
