Carolyn J. Dean teaches History at Brown University.  She is the author of The Self and Its Pleasures: Bataille, Lacan, and the History of the Decentered Subject (Cornell, 1992); Sexuality and Modern Western Culture (Twayne, 1996); The Frail Social Body: Pornography, Homsexuality and Other Fantasies in Interwar France (Univ. of California Press, 2000); and The Fragility of Empathy after the Holocaust (Cornell, 2004).  She is currently working on a comparative study of conceptions of victimization in France and Italy after the Second World War.
